Exhibit Bits: VII
17 June, 2010 at 20:13 | Posted in Art, Exhibit Bits | 3 CommentsTags: AGO, Art, Bell Lightbox, Contemporary Art, Drama and Desire, Edward Degas, Eugene Delacroix, Exhibit, Royal Ontario Museum, Rude Britannia, Tate Britain, Terracotta Army, TIFF, Tim Burton
Think the English are hard on their football players? See how the politicians fare in Tate Britain’s Rude Britannia show.
The masters are present and accounted for at the AGO. The Gallery’s Drama and Desire exhibition features artwork inspired by the theatre by the likes of Degas and Delacroix. It opens this weekend but will be closed during the G20.
TIFF’s Lightbox is debuting in grand style; the venue will open in the middle of the 2010 film festival and play host to the Tim Burton exhibtion.
And although it’s not a contemporary exhibition, I did want to higlight the opening of the Royal Ontario Museum’s The Warrior Emperor and China’s Terracotta Army. I’ll be working the media preview on Friday, June 25.

The National Gallery of Canada‘s Pop Life exhibit opens in one month, and I’m excited. Will Jeff Koon’s Made in Heaven cause a kerfuffle? Will they locate enough pairs of identical twins? And what’s available in the gift shop? That one, I did a bit of research on. The Pop Life exhibition was previously held at the Tate Modern in London, so I browsed their website to get an idea of what would be available.
Exhibit poster featuring Jeff Koons’ Rabbit £7
Murakami postcards £2 / pack
Murakami pins £12 / each
Murakami stickers £4.50 / pack
Murakami tee £50
Jeff Koons tee £25
This tee was the winning entry in a design competition. The concept was ‘Pop Life Deserves a Toast.’ Retails for £30.

Tracey Emin tote bag £30
the Pop Life tote is a steal at £6.50, and my personal favourite

The Gallery will likely have their own merchandise as well. Only one way to find out; support Canadian museums and visit the NGC!

A Richard Kern retrospective opened at Toronto’s Studio Gallery on May 1. The photographer’s images often appear alongside Ryan McGinley‘s in Vice. I plan to see it this weekend, as the gallery is located just around the corner from my new apartment.
An Ellen von Unwerth exhibit went on display yesterday in Paris. Timed to coincide with the Cannes International Film Festival, Ellen’Cinema will feature the photographer’s images of well-known actors and actresses.
The Foundation Beyeler has amassed a collection of work by Jean-Michel Basquiat that is said to be the largest European retrospective ever held for the American street artist. The exhibition opens in Switzerland on Sunday, May 9.
Fox, Fluevog & Friends opens at the Museum of Vancouver on Friday, May 14 with over 100 pairs of the designers’ shoes on display. Peter Fox and John Fluevog began their collaboration in 1970, resulting in shoes that were simultaneously retro and fashion-forward.

Exhibit Bits: Hussein Chalayan
15 April, 2010 at 22:43 | Posted in Exhibit Bits, Style | Leave a commentTags: Anglophile, Exhibit, Fashion, Hussein Chalayan, Japan, Museum of Contemporary Art Toyko
The work of fashion designer Hussein Chalayan is now on display at Toyko’s Museum of Contemporary Art. The collection will feature clothing, film and installations from throughout his 15-year career. The exhibit opened on April 3 and will continue until June 20.
If you’ve unfamiliar with his work, expect the unexpected. His futuristic pieces have twice earned the Turkish-born designer the title of British Designer of the Year.
Highlights are sure to include jaw dropping pieces such as the table that can be worn as a skirt
Shape-shifting dresses that alter by remote-control
Dreamy dresses that sparkle with LED lights
Jagged outfits that show off your carnivorous side
Lazer pieces that turn models into real-life fembots ready to kill
And a frock covered in billowing soap suds.
In other words, there’s something for everyone!

Art: Exhibit Bits [Warhol Edition]
6 April, 2010 at 02:22 | Posted in Art, Exhibit Bits, Photography | Leave a commentTags: Art, Brooklyn Museum, Jerry Hall, NYC, Photography, Playboy, Steven Kasher Gallery, Warhol, Warhol Museum
The world’s most famous pop artist continues to extend his 15 minutes of fame.
The Brooklyn Museum will host a major exhibition of his mature works this summer in Andy Warhol: The Last Decade.
Elsewhere in the five boroughs, Chelsea’s Steven Kasher Gallery is currently displaying over 70 previously unseen Warhol photographs. The photos were chosen by Warhol to appear in a book, but it was cancelled in 1979. The project has been revived and will be published this year as Andy Warhol: Unexposed Exposures.
Back in Pittsburgh, the Warhol Museum is hosting Playboy Redux: Contemporary Artists Interpret the Iconic Playboy Bunny. The exhibit is part of ongoing events celebrating the magazine’s 50th anniversary.

Art: Rankin

There are a few artists I actively seek out to feature in this space. Rankin is one of them.
And wouldn’t you know it, the celebrated photographer is currently exhibiting a collection of his erotic works at Annroy Gallery in London. The show, playfully entitled Cheeky, opened yesterday.
I discovered Rankin through Q magazine, where he frequently shoots covers and artist profiles. He is omnipresent on newsstands, serving as founding editor of Dazed & Confused and publisher of Another Magazine while shooting everything from Playboy pictorials to commercial print ads.
Cheeky is sexy and beautiful, but its content is perhaps a bit too risque for this space. So check out his website for a sneak peak. I’ve included a few of his celebrity portraits – you’re sure to recognize a few.

Art: Storm Thorgerson

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m a bit of an Anglophile. But who can blame me as long as the UK keeps producing stuff like this: public relations agency Idea Generation is hosting a gallery exhibition of Storm Thorgerson’s artwork. He is best known for the album art he’s produced for Pink Floyd and Muse.
His compositions often remind me of Magritte; bright blue skies, faceless bodies and at first glance they seem rather banal but there’s always something there to throw you off. You can read more about his work and his influences here.
I love seeing the work of classic artists referenced in contemporary mediums; it’s a knowing wink to those who recognize it. Thorgerson’s work will be shown along with previously unseen sculptures, sketches and writings from April 2 until May 2 in London.

More exhibit news from Alberta! Now that the Art Gallery of Alberta has successfully launched, Calgary’s Telus World of Science will begin Bodyworlds on April 30.
The Victoria & Albert Museum in London will open a temporary exhibit dedicated to style icon Grace Kelly. Opening on April 17, it will display the dress she wore during her civil wedding ceremony to Prince Rainier, numerous film costumes, the original Hermes Kelly bag and her Oscar.
Terry O’Neill has been taking photos since the late 1950s. He’s put together an exhibit which includes both classic shots (such the one above of Faye Dunaway) and never-before-seen work. It’s currently showing at London’s Chris Beetles gallery, and will head to New York’s Morrison Hotel Gallery on April 22.
