School Related: Internship Update

As an update to a previous post, I am pleased to confirm that I have secured an internship with the Royal Ontario Museum. The venue will be the first to host The Warrior Emperor and China’s Terracotta Army exhibit, which opens in June.
The exhibition showcases the finds of a 1974 archaeological dig that unearthed the elaborate underground tomb of China’s First Emperor. Over 250 ancient artifacts will go on display, including 18 life-sized terracotta warriors and horses.
Working on the launch will be a trip!

I’ve already written a post regarding the importance of your online Personal Brand, and I even included a link to my Personal Brand presentation. We’ve been discussing them in our Social Media class, and several students have shown their presentations to the class. The resulting discussion inspired me to create more of a niche within my class. What makes me unique among the peers that I will graduate with? I believe it is my design skills and interest in fine art, so I’m going to be focussing more on these topics on my Twitter and this blog.
My Twitter feed will feature an ongoing list of Design Tips. These tips will be relevant to public relations students and can be exercised when putting together basic reports and assignments. I believe it will also prepare them (you?) for more advanced design programs such as Adobe Illustrator.
I’ll be sure to compile the Design Tips and post them here periodically.

My entire Organizational Communication Theory class recently interviewed Humber professor Lorne Frohman for the purpose of writing individual feature articles. I was able to get in a question, which focussed on Frohman’s extensive experience in comedy writing. One subject that came up during the interview was women in comedy, and how their role continues to evolve.
I immeadiately thought of some very talented ladies: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Samantha Bee, Anna Faris, Reese Witherspoon. But my favourite by far is Julia Louis-Dreyfuss. Her work on Seinfeld entertained me to no end, and I love that her character was just as ridiculous, self-centered and neurotic as the boys.
Here’s a link to a 4:07 video of my favourite Elaine episode:

Meanwhile, the feature article was very slow going. I discovered it’s difficult to write a feature in an active voice when talking about an individual’s past experience. I’ve completed it, but I don’t even want know how time time I spent on each of my 500 words! I titled the article Lorn Frohman Stars As The Reluctant Professor, because he’s a Jerry Lewis fan. Awful? So awful it works? We’ll see how that plays out.

School Related: My Personal Brand Plan

This standalone blog is the result of my Personal Brand Plan, which I completed for my Social Media class.
Our Personal Brand Plans are to reflect the goals of our online brand. The definition of an online brand has been much-debated by our class, and I have interpreted it as thus:
The power of Google is all-empcompassing; it is very likely that your name will be searched online by potential employers. And it is no longer enough that you have abolished all embarassing photos and stories attached to your name; in order to remain competitive in today’s job market, your online brand should be reflected in the professional material related to a Google name search.
I am very lucky that my name is unique; as a result, I have vowed to take full advantage of this.
The most practical part of putting together this Plan was doing a personal SWOT, which requires that you identity Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats related to your goals. I highly recommend that you complete one.

School Related: Media Kit Proposal

I am very excited to begin our new PR Writing assignment. We have been instructed to create a media kit for a hypothetical product or event of our choice. Our professor has suggested that our assignment reflect our professional interests, as it will make a good addition to a professional portfolio.
My dream job is to perform Public Relations duties for the National Portrait Gallery of Canada. This is an ambitious goal, as the National Portrait Gallery does not even exist yet as a permanent gallery space. Working for this organization would meld my interests in supporting Canadian artists and our national culture, as well as my love of fine art and portraiture.
In keeping with this goal, I proposed the following media kit topic:
The Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto is playing host to a traveling exhibition of portraits in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery of London, United Kingdom. The National Portrait Gallery’s collection features portraits of the most famous people in British history, and it has donated numerous works to be displayed at three museums across Canada. The Art Gallery of Ontario is honoured to have been chosen to host the exhibit, entitled The People of Britain: A Proud History.
It was approved, so now I have the opportunity to write about some my favourite pieces in the National Portrait Gallery’s collection.

School Related: Social Media Hot Topic

The Humber PR Certificate class of 2009 – 2010 is notable thus far for one reason: we are the only ones to have been assigned a course dedicated to Social Media. Despite the fact that all visiting grads say we’re ‘so lucky,’ teaching our class about online public relations tactics is like pulling teeth. It seems that many of us are simply not inclined to accept social media.
And I admit that I’m no exception. But I’m slowing coming around to blogging, and I am definetly addicted to my Google Reader. My RSS subscriptions consist of a lot of style blogs; it is the most practical form of international people watching. There`s also some illustration, design, and Canadian media and event content thrown in for good measure.
Our Social Media requires that we keep our eyes open for any online ‘Hot Topics’ emerging in Social Media; here is my blog post.
HOT TOPIC: Social Media Writers Gaining Fashion Cred
My hot topic emerged from several fashion-related blogs. Fashion bloggers are becoming increasingly powerful, earning interest from both designers and pr professionals. All parties involved are currently navigating the waters of how to deal with the power of social media.

Social Media writers are now earning the same perks as traditional print media writers.
A few high-profile examples:
- The Sartorialist was ranked at #20 on the UK Guardian’s most powerful blogs of 2008. Photographer Scott Schuman is a people watcher who posts photos of individuals with inspiring personal style. His site attracts more than 70,000 readers a day and has been named one of Time’s Top 100 Design Influences
- WhoWhatWear.com posts information on fashion trends, celebrity style, and inspiring personal style The site has had so much online success that they recently published a book.
- Tavi Gevinson is a 13-year old Amercian who’s blog was regarded as so professional and influential it resulted in invitations from established designers to attend their shows and even provide feedback on their designs.
- Garance Dore is a fashion illustrator who recently blogged about Dolce & Gabanna’s most recent show, in which she and three other bloggers were provided with laptops and coveted front-row seats. She called it “a revelation,” and had the chance to interview both designers after the show. The pair explained that their priority is communicating with their clients. And if their client are online, they are eager to participate.

There are so many blogs out there that they have recently formed their own online community, the Independent Fashion Bloggers, which provides a community as well as tips for those who run their own sites. Twitter’s 140-character conferences have also featured fashion-related discussion panels, with topics such as “Twitter Effects on Retailers.”
All this high-profile attention has resulted in fashion pr firms and designers being inundated by requests from bloggers looking for free samples, tickets, and media accreditation. But with so many blogs out there in cyberspace; not all can receive such exclusive perks. Just what are fashion PR reps and designers looking for? Research done by the IFB indicates that the standards for social media is identical to those of traditional media: writing ability, strong website content, followers that provide lots of feedback, and, of course, traffic.
One PR rep is quoted as saying: “I do feel fashion bloggers expect too much. Recently, during a fashion week, there were many requests from bloggers for front row seating. After looking up their sites I only granted front row to two of [them]. [Many of the sites] were local bloggers but their sites were either outdated or just not read.”

Final tips for Fashion PR professionals on dealing with members of Social Media:
- Don’t be afraid to say “no”. With such a wide variety of brands and sites out there, there is no reason why people should work together if they have anything less than a perfect fit.
- The community is very tightly-knit, so always be honest and polite when dealing with requests.
- Bloggers have indicated that they are interested in developing ongoing relationships with PR people, and wish to use their help to develop their online persona. If a blogger jsut isn’t a good fit for your client, politely decline the offer and offer constructive feedback.
With bloggers, PR reps, and designers all working together, the outcome will hopefully result in positive outcomes for all parties involved.
Update: In keeping with this theme, I wanted to mention that the US government has recently announced restrictions regrading free samples that bloggers receive from corporations. So much for free samples from your favourite label!

School Related: My 10-year Goal
9 November, 2009 at 03:48 | Posted in School Related | Leave a commentTags: London, School Related, Writing
Our first week of Humber PR ended with an assignment to write a short autobiography. My piece was very rough but I think the message says a lot about me, so I wanted to share it here.
I’d wanted to live in London since I was 16 years old. At 26, I accomplished that goal.
It began when my twin brother brought home a copy of the Oasis album, What’s the Story Morning Glory. The band was English, and it inspired an intense interest in the United Kingdom. I wanted to experience life at its epicentre, in the city of London.
After completing my undergraduate studies in Toronto, I remained in the city and found a job in my field. Working in a professional occupation for the first time, I could finance my first trip to Europe. Visiting London was my priority. Now you may think that because I’d been building this city up in my head for many years, I was bound to be disappointed. But central London was just as I’d imagined it; busy winding streets buzzing with culture.
I returned to Toronto, but my dream had been revitalized. I was now even more determined to experience life as a London resident for a minimum of one year.
This goal came to fruition in August 2008, when I arrived in London with no job, no flat and no friends. Despite those circumstanced, I quickly overcame those hurdles and fell in love with the city of London repeatedly over the course of the year.
Accomplishing a goal that I’ve held for 10 years was emplowering. Now I know I can do anything I put my mind to. I feel unstoppable.

I recently began classes in Public Relations at Humber College.
I’ve always held interests in writing, messaging, and how individuals and organization are present themselves and are represented in the media.
I also posses skills in customer service; I genuinely enjoy collaborating with people and helping clients solve their problems.
On top of that, I support and admire media, design, fine art, and Canadian content.
This is what has brought me to the program, and I intend to make the most of it! You can continue to learn more about me here, so keep checking back!
